Ultrasound technicians aid in the diagnosis of abnormalities in many of the internal body organ systems, by using a sonogram machine, which creates active pictures of these internal systems using harmless high frequency sound. It is an interesting and highly lucrative field.
Licensing for technicians is not part of the ultrasound technician requirements in New York, however, as in the other states in the country, you must obtain voluntary certification from The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or you will find it difficult to get a full time job.
How is this achieved? You must be a high school graduate and attend a minimum 2 year associates degree program from a school that is accredited by the Commission On Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). If you choose a program that is not CAAHEP accredited, you will not be able to sit for your certification examinations.
Contact CAAHEP for a list of the schools or other programs in New York that are accredited.
